Josseline Brass Crystal Crown Wall Lamp lit on a wall, with two tiers of crystal prisms under a brass crown

Brass and clear crystal

JosselineBrass Crystal Crown Wall Lamp

The Josseline Brass Crystal Crown Wall Lamp rises from a leaf-carved brass backplate into a scrolled arm that holds a crowned crystal shade.

Two tiers of clear crystal prisms hang from the brass crown, so the bulb behind them is broken into fine points of light that carry across the wall. It comes as a single light or a double, both on the same backplate and both 38 cm tall.

Single or double

One crown, or two

Both versions share the same 14 x 30 cm backplate, the same 38 cm height and the same crystal crown. The single is narrow enough to flank a mirror or a doorway; the double covers more wall and puts out twice the light from one box.

The crystal

Two tiers, cut clear

The prisms hang in two rows from the brass crown: a long upper tier and a shorter one below it. Each is cut on every face and hung on its own pin, so the row moves slightly and never reads as a flat curtain. Because the crystal is clear rather than frosted, the bulb stays the source and the prisms do the work, throwing small highlights onto the wall either side of the fixture.

How it lights

Up the wall, down the wall

The crown is open at the top, so part of the light goes straight up and washes the wall above the fixture; the rest falls through the prisms into a soft pool below. Nothing is aimed out into the room, which is why a pair of these reads as warm light rather than glare across a mirror.

The two tiers of crystal take what is left and scatter it: small moving highlights on the wall either side, brighter with a clear bulb, calmer with a frosted one. On a plain painted wall the pattern shows clearly; on a busy wallpaper it mostly disappears.

On and off

Brass by day, light by night

Switched off, the Josseline is a piece of cast brass with clear crystal hanging from it, which is why it holds a hallway or a bedside wall even in daylight. Switched on, the bulb sits behind the prisms: the crown throws light up the wall, the crystal breaks the rest into points, and the fixture becomes the brightest thing in the corner.

The brass

Four parts, one casting at a time

The lamp is built from four cast pieces, each doing a job.

Off the wall

How far it stands out

The single light projects 26 cm / 10.2" from the wall and the double 23 cm / 9.1", measured to the outside of the crystal. That is worth checking before it goes up, because the prisms hang free and should not be brushed past.

  1. In a hallwayKeep a fixture of this depth out of the walking line, or mount it above head height. In a tight corridor, a shallower fixture is the safer choice.
  2. Beside a mirrorLeave at least 10 cm / 4" between the backplate and the mirror frame, so the prisms clear the glass.
  3. Beside a bedSet it far enough from the pillow that nobody catches the crystal when sitting up.

Mounting height

Where to set it on the wall

These are the heights that suit most rooms. Measure to the middle of the fixture rather than to the box, and match the height on every lamp in the same room.

Center about 65 inBeside a mirrorAbout 30 inBeside a bed8 to 10 ft apartAlong a hallway
  • Beside a mirrorCenter the fixture about 65 in above the floor, roughly at eye level, and 28 to 36 in apart on either side of the glass.
  • Beside a bedSet the middle of the fixture about 30 in above the nightstand, so the light falls on the book rather than in your eyes.
  • Along a hallwayKeep the centers 65 to 70 in above the floor and space them 8 to 10 ft apart for an even run.

Where it goes

Where it fits best

A wall lamp does the job an overhead fixture cannot: light at eye level, close to where you use it. These are the three places the Josseline earns its keep.

A pair of wall lamps either side of a mirror
Either side of a mirrorA pair of singles at eye level lights a face evenly, which one fixture overhead cannot do. Keep them 28 to 36 in apart.
Wall lamps lighting a hallway
Hallways and stair wallsRepeat the single at even spacing, or use one double on a landing where there is more wall to fill.

Bedsides and living roomsFrees the nightstand, and the crystal keeps the corner interesting even by day.

Care

Caring for the Josseline

Before you clean

Switch the power off at the breaker and let the bulb cool. The prisms hang on open pins, so work on one row at a time rather than wiping across them.

Crystal prisms

Dust with a soft dry cloth or a soft brush. For marks, wipe each prism with a barely damp cloth and dry at once; do not let water run down onto the brass.

Gold brass

Wipe with a soft dry cloth only. Abrasive pads and ammonia or acid cleaners will dull the finish and can catch in the cast leaf work.

Questions

What buyers ask most about the Josseline, answered in full.

Should I choose the single or the double?

It comes down to how much wall you have. The single is 14 cm / 5.5" wide and is made to be used in pairs: one either side of a mirror, a bed or a doorway, or repeated down a hallway. The double is 32 cm / 12.6" wide and reads as one piece, which suits a wider wall such as a landing, a fireplace or a stair wall where a single would look lost. Both are 38 cm / 15.0" tall on the same 14 x 30 cm backplate, so the two can be used in the same room without looking mismatched.

How far does it stand out from the wall?

The single projects 26 cm / 10.2" and the double 23 cm / 9.1", measured from the wall to the outside of the crystal. That is a real projection, so check it before ordering. In a narrow hallway keep a fixture of this depth clear of the walking line or mount it above head height; beside a mirror leave about 10 cm / 4" between the backplate and the frame so the prisms hang free; beside a bed, set it far enough from the pillow that nobody catches the crystal sitting up.

Are bulbs included, and which bulbs should I use?

Bulbs are not included. It takes E12/E14 candelabra bulbs, one in the single and two in the double. Because the crystal is clear, the bulb is part of what you see: a clear candle bulb gives the sharpest points of light through the prisms, while a frosted bulb softens the source, which is worth doing where the lamp sits at eye level beside a mirror. The color of the light comes from the bulb, and a warm white reads closest to the way the fixture is photographed.

Is it dimmable?

The lamp has standard E12/E14 sockets and no driver of its own, so dimming comes down to the bulbs and the switch: fit dimmable bulbs and pair them with a dimmer rated for that bulb type. A dimmer suits this design, because the bulb sits behind clear crystal rather than a shade, and turning it down keeps the prisms sparkling while taking the glare out of the bulb itself.

Can I use it in a bathroom?

It is a dry-location decorative fixture rather than a damp-rated one, so keep it away from the shower and out of any spot that takes steam or splashes. Over a vanity in a well-ventilated bathroom it is generally fine, and a pair either side of the mirror at about 65 in gives better light on a face than one fixture overhead. Have your electrician confirm the exact position against local code.

How is it installed, and do I hang the prisms myself?

It is hardwired to a wall junction box rather than plugged in, so a licensed electrician should install it; the 14 x 30 cm backplate covers a standard box. Turn the power off at the breaker first. Some prisms may be packed separately so they do not knock together in transit: they hook onto the crown on small pins, the long upper tier first and then the shorter lower one. Fit them after the plate is on the wall, keep the spacing even, and check every pin is closed before switching on.

Four hands-on stages

From a bar of raw brass to the frame of your lamp, each stage is done by a person at a machine or a bench.

Brass

Mostly copper, strengthened with zinc. That simple mix gives brass its warm golden color, its weight and its strength, and it is the metal we build our lamp bodies from.

You feel it the moment you lift it

Brass is one of the densest metals used in lighting. That weight is why a brass lamp hangs steady and feels solid in your hands.

Detail that stays sharp

Machined brass keeps crisp lines; cast alloys tend to look soft.
