Aveyron Brass Urn Candle Chandelier with a fluted clear glass urn held in cast gold brass

Gold brass and clear glass

AveyronBrass Urn Candle Chandelier

The Aveyron Brass Urn Candle Chandelier sets a fluted clear glass urn at its center, held in cast gold brass and ringed by candle arms that curve out and turn up to the light.

Cast figures and scrolling acanthus run down the frame, and a second glass baluster hangs below the arms to finish the drop. Three sizes share the same 115 cm height, so the shape stays the same whether it hangs in an entry or over a long table.

Three sizes

Same shape, three widths

Every size is 115 cm tall; only the spread of the arms changes. The three drawings below are to the same scale, so the difference in width is the real one.

The glass

A fluted urn, cut clear

The urn at the center is clear glass, ribbed from the shoulder down so the flutes catch the candlelight and carry it around the body. Because the glass is clear rather than frosted, the brass behind it stays visible and the piece reads as one object instead of a lamp with a shade.

The same fluting repeats in the baluster below the arms and in the drop at the very bottom, which keeps the eye travelling down the full 115 cm.

The castings

Brass worked all the way round

The frame is cast in gold brass and finished by hand. The detail is not pressed onto a flat face; it is modelled, so it holds a shadow line and still reads from across the room.

Look closely

Cast brass, not painted metal

Two close-ups of the same part of the frame. One is brass with a gold finish; the other is a cheaper casting sprayed to look like it. The difference shows in the detail on day one, and in how the piece ages after that.

OursCast brass in an even gold finish. The acanthus keeps its edges and the surface holds an even warm tone.
A painted finish on a cheaper fixture, chipped and flaking off the casting
Painted finishesSprayed coating over a cheaper casting. It chips at the high points and flakes away, leaving patchy dull metal underneath.
  • The finishA finish applied to brass wears slowly and evenly. A sprayed coat sits on top of the metal and lifts at the edges.
  • The detailPaint pools in the recesses and softens the leaf work; the cast detail stays sharp when it is finished properly.
  • Ten years onBrass keeps its color or mellows. A flaking paint job cannot be cleaned back and has to be refinished or replaced.

The light

Candles, not shades

Every arm ends in a brass cup and a candle sleeve, with the bulb sitting above it in full view. There is no shade and no diffuser, so the bulb you choose is part of the design.

Clear candelabra bulbs give bright points of light that the glass flutes pick up, and suit a room with a dimmer. Frosted bulbs soften the light and are easier to look at when the chandelier hangs low over a table. The color of the light comes from the bulbs, not from the fixture.

Setting the drop

Where to hang it

The fixture is 115 cm / 45.3" tall on its own, and the 30 cm / 11.8" chain is adjusted on site. Plan for a total drop of roughly 115 to 145 cm below the ceiling.

  1. Over a dining tableKeep the bottom of the glass drop about 30 to 36 in above the table top, so it clears sight lines across the table.
  2. In an entry or a stairwellLeave at least 7 ft from the floor to the bottom of the fixture where people walk underneath; a stairwell can take more drop because it is seen from above as well.
  3. Check the ceiling heightAt 115 cm the fixture wants a ceiling of about 9 ft or more over a table. Under 8 ft, use the 3-light where nobody walks below it.

Where it goes

Where it fits best

  • Over the dining tableThe 6-light sits above eye level on a 9 ft ceiling and lights the table without hiding the people across it.
  • In an entry or a stairwellThe full 115 cm drop reads properly from the stair as well as from the floor, and the 3-light fits a narrow landing.
  • In a living room or a bedroomThe 8-light carries a wide room on its own, with lamps for reading rather than more ceiling light.

Care

Caring for the Aveyron

Before you clean

Switch the power off at the breaker and let the bulbs cool. Work with the fixture in place rather than lifting it down; the glass parts are held on the frame.

Clear glass

Dust with a soft dry cloth, and use a soft brush along the flutes where dust settles. For marks, wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry at once, so nothing dries in the ribs.

Gold brass

Wipe with a soft dry cloth only. Abrasive pads and ammonia or acid cleaners will dull the gold finish and can catch in the cast detail.

Questions

What buyers ask most about the Aveyron, answered in full.

Which size should I choose?

Match the width to the room and the table. The 3-light at Ø 43 cm suits a landing, an entry, a powder room or a round table for four. The 6-light at Ø 70 cm is the usual dining size, for tables of about 60 to 84 in and rooms of about 12 to 15 ft across. The 8-light at Ø 95 cm is for a long table, a wide living room or a two-storey entry. All three are the same height, so the choice is only about width.

Are bulbs included, and which bulbs should I use?

Bulbs are not included. The Aveyron takes E12/E14 candelabra bulbs, three, six or eight depending on the size. The sleeves are open, so the bulb is visible: clear candle bulbs give bright points of light that the fluted glass picks up, while frosted bulbs are gentler to look at when the fixture hangs low over a table. The color temperature comes from the bulbs, and warm white reads closest to the way the fixture is photographed.

Does the 115 cm height include the chain?

No. 115 cm / 45.3" is the fixture itself, from the top of the crown down to the bottom of the glass drop. The 30 cm / 11.8" chain and the canopy sit above that, so plan for a total drop of roughly 115 to 145 cm below the ceiling once the chain is set.

What ceiling height does it need?

Over a dining table, a ceiling of about 9 ft or more suits it: the bottom of the fixture should land roughly 30 to 36 in above the table top, which leaves the candles above eye level. In an entry or a hallway where people walk underneath, keep at least 7 ft from the floor to the bottom of the glass. On an 8 ft ceiling, use the 3-light and hang it where nobody passes below it.

Can I shorten or lengthen the chain?

The chain is adjusted on site, so links can be taken off to raise the fixture. If you need a longer drop than the supplied 30 cm, matching chain and extra wire can be added by your electrician.

Is it dimmable?

The fixture uses standard E12/E14 sockets and has no driver of its own, so dimming depends on the bulbs and the switch: fit dimmable bulbs and pair them with a dimmer rated for that bulb type. A dimmer suits this design, because dropping the level turns the candles down to a glow while the glass still catches the light.

What is the glass, and is the urn one piece?

The glass is clear, fluted and used for the central urn, the baluster below the arms and the drop at the bottom. It is not frosted, so you see the brass frame through it. The urn is a glass body held between brass collars rather than a shade, which is why the fixture reads as a single piece rather than a lamp with a cover.

How is it installed?

It is hardwired to a ceiling junction box, so a licensed electrician should install it. The box needs to be rated for the weight of the fixture, and the 6- and 8-light sizes are easier with two people: one to take the weight while the other sets the chain and wires the canopy. Turn the power off at the breaker before any work starts.

Four hands-on stages

From a bar of raw brass to the frame of your lamp, each stage is done by a person at a machine or a bench.

Brass

Mostly copper, strengthened with zinc. That simple mix gives brass its warm golden color, its weight and its strength, and it is the metal we build our lamp bodies from.

You feel it the moment you lift it

Brass is one of the densest metals used in lighting. That weight is why a brass lamp hangs steady and feels solid in your hands.
