Glass is the only shade material that works in both directions: it throws light down onto the counter and lets the room see the light source as an object. That double duty is why glass rows are the default over islands, and why getting the arithmetic right matters more than with any opaque shade.

How high and how far apart?

End pendants sit 12 to 15 in inside the island ends. Ceilings over 8 ft: add about 3 in of height per extra foot.

Which glass reads best in a row?

Repetition amplifies texture. A faceted piece like the Jewel Square glass pendant, our most reordered pendant, turns three bulbs into a run of cut stones. Organic textures like the Metallic Lava pendant do the opposite: each shade differs slightly, which relaxes a very geometric kitchen. Keep one texture per row; mixing textures reads as an accident.

What about a single pendant?

Small islands and peninsulas under 4 ft carry one larger shade better than a crowded pair. A wide soft-glow piece such as the SPACE Scandinavian pendant at 18 to 24 inches wide gives working light without the runway effect.

How do you hang a pendant row in seven steps?

1. Mark the layout. Mark pendant positions on the counter with tape: end pendants 12 to 15 inches inside the island ends, the rest spaced evenly 24 to 30 inches apart.
2. Cut power. Switch the circuit off at the breaker and confirm with a non-contact voltage tester.
3. Set the first canopy. Install the first pendant at the island's center point and level its canopy before touching the others.
4. Measure one drop. Set the first shade 30 to 36 inches above the counter, then note the exact cord length at the canopy.
5. Match the rest. Repeat the same cord length on every remaining pendant before trimming or looping any excess.
6. Level the row. Run a taut string or laser across the shade bottoms and adjust until the row is level within half an inch.
7. Wire one dimmer. Put the whole row on a single TRIAC or ELV dimmer with 2700K dimmable LED bulbs, and set an evening preset around 40 percent.

How many pendants do I need over a kitchen island?

Divide the island length in inches by 30. A 60 inch island takes two pendants, an 84 to 96 inch island takes three. Odd numbers read better than even ones, and the end pendants should sit 12 to 15 inches in from the island ends.

How far apart should island pendants hang?

24 to 30 inches between pendant centers, and 30 to 36 inches from the countertop to the bottom of each shade on an 8 ft ceiling. Add about 3 inches of height for each extra foot of ceiling.

What size glass pendant for an island?

Are glass pendants hard to keep clean?

No. Wipe the outside monthly with a dry microfiber cloth, and twice a year remove the shade and wash it in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap. Dry fully before rehanging. Never spray cleaner toward the socket.
