Isamu Noguchi (1904 – 1988) was a multifaceted artist, known for his work as a furniture designer, ceramicist, theatre designer, and landscape architect. In 1951, he embarked on designing the Akari 50A Pendant Light Sculptures, aiming to rejuvenate the declining craft of lantern making at Ozeki. The term Akari means ‘light’ in Japanese, symbolizing luminosity and weightlessness. Noguchi eloquently described the series, stating: “The harshness of electricity is… transformed through the magic of paper back to the light of our origin – the sun – so that its warmth may continue to fill our rooms at night.”
