The Akari Table Lamp is a component of the Akari light sculptures, originally created by the American Japanese artist in 1951. The name "Akari" was deliberately chosen to represent the Japanese term for "light", symbolizing both enlightenment and physical lightness. The design for these lamps was inspired by the artist's visit to the Japanese fishing village of Gifu, where he observed the fishermen using trained cormorants and lanterns to attract fish. The lanterns were crafted with bamboo ribs and delicate paper, which influenced the use of mulberry tree paper in the Akari table lamp to create a soft, evenly dispersed light.
